The goal
Win rounds by playing the white card the Card Czar finds funniest.
Setup
- Shuffle the black cards (prompts) and the white cards (answers) into two piles.
- Everyone draws ten white cards.
- Choose the first Card Czar. The box game’s rules say it’s whoever pooped most recently.
How a round works
- The Card Czar plays a black card and reads it out.
- Everyone else picks one white card that answers the question or fills the blank, and passes it face down to the Czar.
- If the black card says Pick 2, play two white cards in the order they should be read.
- The Czar shuffles the answers and reads each one out with the black card.
- The Czar picks the funniest, and whoever played it gets one Awesome Point.
- Everyone draws back up to ten, and a new player becomes the Card Czar.
Scoring and winning
- Each round you win is one Awesome Point.
- The box game’s rules don’t set an end, so agree a target before you start, or play until you want to stop.
- The Card Czar doesn’t play a white card in the round they judge.
The box game’s house rules
A random extra player
Each round, add one random white card from the pile as an imaginary player, Rando Cardrissian. If Rando wins the game, everyone goes home in shame.
Gambling
Bet an Awesome Point to play a second white card. Win the round and you keep it; lose and the round’s winner takes it.
Rebooting the Universe
At any time, trade in an Awesome Point to swap as many white cards as you like.
God Is Dead
Play with no Card Czar: everyone votes for their favourite, and the most votes wins the round.
Playing Bad Cards on Table Party
Bad Cards is Table Party’s version: free in the browser, with everyone on their own phone. A round goes like this.
- A prompt goes up with a blank in it. One player judges; everybody else plays from a hand of seven.
- The plays are shuffled and read out with nobody’s name attached.
- The judge picks the one that landed, and only then does the room learn who wrote it.
- That card takes the point, and the judge’s chair moves one seat along.
- First to three takes the game. Three decks: Family, Party and After Dark (18+).
What’s different here
- Bad Cards is Table Party’s own game with its own cards; it isn’t the box game.
- Plays are shuffled and shown with no names attached, and the room learns who wrote the winner only after the pick.
- Hands are seven cards, and the first to five points wins, so a game takes 15–25 minutes.
- Choose from three decks, from Family to After Dark.
The fiddly bits on Table Party
The prompt
One card with a blank in it. Some have two, and those take two answer cards in the order you play them.
The hand
Seven answer cards, refilled after every round. The judge sits the round out and plays nothing.
Anonymity
Plays are shuffled and read with no author attached. Nobody, judge included, learns who wrote what until the pick is made.
Scoring
The chosen card takes one point for its author. First to five wins, and the judge’s chair moves one seat every round.
The decks
Family, Party and After Dark, chosen by the host on the lobby. After Dark is never on by default.
The official rules
For the publisher’s own wording, read the official rules from Cards Against Humanity LLC. Table Party is independent and isn’t affiliated with Cards Against Humanity LLC.
Questions about Bad Cards
How many cards do you hold in the box game?
Ten white cards. After every round, everyone draws back up to ten.
How do you win Bad Cards?
Be the first to five points. In the box game, you win by holding the most Awesome Points when you stop; its rules set no target, so many groups agree one first.
How does Pick 2 work?
Everyone plays two white cards together, in the order the Czar should read them. The order matters.
Is Bad Cards free?
Yes. Every game on Table Party is free, with no accounts, no adverts and nothing to buy.
How many people do you need for Bad Cards?
Between 3 and 12. Below 3 there are not enough of you for the game to work.
Do we need to download anything?
No. One person opens the site and starts a room; everybody else joins by typing the room code on their own phone. Nothing to install, nothing to sign up for.
Can we play Bad Cards over a video call?
Yes. Share the room code in the chat and play with the call running — everything private stays on each player’s own phone.
