What Ruff Luck is

Russian roulette with a deck of cards and a lot of dogs. Play cards to dodge, peek, steal and skip — then draw, and hope. Last dog standing wins.

On your turn you may play as much of your hand as you like — skips, steals, peeks, a shuffle — and none of it ends your turn. Only drawing does. So every card you play is a way of putting off the one thing you have to do, and the pile gets shorter while you put it off.

Draw a Bad Dog and you are out, unless you are holding a Squeaky Bone. Spend the bone and you hide the dog back in the pile yourself, at any depth you choose: on top for the player to your left, or far enough down that the room forgets it is coming. Everyone is dealt one bone and there are only a few spares.

Down, Boy! is the card that makes it a party. It cancels whatever was just played, from any seat, at any moment — including the Down, Boy! that cancelled yours. The window is a few seconds long, closes the instant everybody who could interrupt has passed, and never opens at all when nobody is holding one.

How to play Ruff Luck

  1. Everyone starts holding eight cards, one of which is a Squeaky Bone.
  2. On your turn, play as many cards as you like — or none at all.
  3. Then draw one card, and that ends your turn.
  4. Draw a Bad Dog and you are out — unless you spend a bone, and then you hide that dog back in the deck wherever you like. Nobody sees where.
  5. Skip and Attack end your turn without drawing one. Attack makes the next player draw twice.
  6. Sniff Ahead shows you the next three cards. Favour takes a card off somebody. Shuffle buys you a fresh deck.
  7. Two matching mutts steal a card at random. Three let you ask for one by name — and you get nothing if they have not got it.
  8. Down, Boy! cancels any card just played — from any seat, the moment it lands. A second Down, Boy! cancels the first.
  9. There is one fewer Bad Dog than there are players, so the game only ends one way: last dog standing.
  10. A turn clock runs by default. Go quiet and the table draws for you — the host can lengthen it or switch it off.
  11. The Big Bad Dog expansion is off until the host switches it on. It adds Reverse, Sic ’Em, a wild Stray — and one dog no bone can save you from.

How to win at Ruff Luck

Count what is left

The number of enders left in the pile is public, and it is the only sum in the game: two of them among the last ten cards makes every draw a one-in-five, which is when a Skip stops being a luxury.

Attack beats Skip

Both end your turn without a draw, but Attack makes the next player draw twice instead of once, so the pile empties on somebody else’s go.

Peek while you can still refuse

Sniff Ahead is worth most when you are still holding a Skip, because knowing what is on top only helps while you can decline it.

Bury it, do not stack it

A defused dog put straight back on top only catches a player with nothing left to play; against a table still holding Skips it travels round until somebody hands it back to you.

Three mutts, not two

A pair steals at random, but three of a kind lets you name the card you want — usually the Down, Boy! the window has already shown you they are holding.

Questions about Ruff Luck

What happens if the deck runs out?

It cannot. The pile is built with more cards in it than there are draws left in a game that ends when one player remains, so the last dog standing is always decided first.

Do knocked-out players just sit there?

Yes — this is the one game here where a seat stops playing while the rest carry on. A round runs five to fifteen minutes, and once the first player goes up the rest follow quickly, because the deck holds one fewer bomb than there are players.

Can a Down, Boy! be cancelled?

Yes, by another one, and it is the usual way to lose a card you were counting on. They stack: an odd number of them means the card never happened, and the chain only closes when everybody holding one has passed.

What does the Big Bad Dog pack add?

It is off until the host switches it on, and it adds Reverse, Dig Deep (draw from the bottom), Rearrange (reorder the top three), Sic ’Em (an attack that picks its victim), a wild Stray — and the Big Bad Dog, which no bone can save you from: it goes back face-up the first time it is drawn and ends somebody the second.

Is Ruff Luck free?

Yes. Every game on Table Party is free, with no accounts, no adverts and nothing to buy.

How many people do you need for Ruff Luck?

Between 2 and 8. Below 2 there are not enough of you for the game to work.

Do we need to download anything?

No. One person opens the site and starts a room; everybody else joins by typing the room code on their own phone. Nothing to install, nothing to sign up for.

Can we play Ruff Luck over a video call?

Yes. Share the room code in the chat and play with the call running — everything private stays on each player’s own phone.
